. at almost exactly this point in the presidential race of 1956, on october 29th, 1956, with the election that year coming up just a week later, israel invaded egypt. and they did it with the secret support of two major u.s. allies. france and england. it was a fight over control of the suez canal. the american president at that time, in 1956, was, of course, dwight eisenhower. republican. he was running for re-election against the democratic candidate that year, adlai stevenson. talk about an october surprise. that year it was eight days before election day. both candidates are forced to deal with an unexpected and genuine giant foreign policy crisis. >> on sunday the israeli government ordered total mobilization. on monday, their armed forces penetrated deeply into egypt and to the vicinity of the suez canal, nearly 100 miles away. and on tuesday, the british and french governments delivered a 12-hour ultimatum to israel and egypt, now followed up by armed attack against egypt. the united states was not consulted in any way about any phase of these actions. nor were we informed of them

five days before the election. the latest round of nbc news wall street journal polls show the president leading in iowa, wisconsin, and new hampshire. but it is still very close. let me bring in washington post columnist dana millbank and molly ball. good morning. >> good morning. >> hi. >> let's start by talking about the president's response to the hurricane. a poll shows 78% view his response positively. what do you think, dana? is this helping him? >> well, i think it's sort of unseenly to try to gauge out who benefits from human tragedy. certainly, whoever is in charge, if it's the president, if he doesn't have a hurricane katrina response, there's going to be some rallying effect whenever there's a national crisis. this seems to have benefitted the president. he hasn't made any obvious mistakes. now, of course, there's still a bit of time, but i think by the time people become disenchanted with the response, that'll be sometime after the election day. so it does appear that mother nature is voting democratic this year. >> well, the images of the president and chris c

. the countdown is on indeed. election day is just three days away now. the presidential candidates are making a huge final push in the battleground states. today president obama campaigns in ohio, wisconsin, iowa and virginia. mitt romney stumping in new hampshire, iowa, and colorado. they're running mates are also going nonstop. vice president is in colorado and paul ryan is holding rallies in pennsylvania, virginia, florida, and ohio. so ohio indeed could be the biggest battleground of the election. the race there is very tight. a just released cnn/orc poll shows obama ahead by just three points, well within the margin of error. an nbc/"wall street journal" poll shows a wider gap with obama leading by six points. president obama is about to speak at a rally in mentor, ohio. he is at least in the building, we understand. and so is our white house correspond dan loathian. the president's schedule is packed today. he isn't just campaigning. he is also keeping a close watch on the storm which he says really is his first priority. >> reporter: that's correct. white house officials saying that pr

morris has a prediction about the outcome of the election. what is it? good evening. erch says it's neck and neck, but your prediction is different? >> it is not neck and neck. it's a few laps, i think... romney is going to win by 5 to 10 points in the popular vote. i think he is going to win the electoral vote by something like 310-220. i think he will carry -- this is want just guess, this is based on the latest polling. i think he will carry new hampshire, ohio, iowa and of course, florida, colrado and virginia. then i think he is going to carry pennsylvania. i think he has a good shot at carrying wisconsin and an outside chance at mish ban and minnesota. but obama made a crucial mistake. he figured he would do ohio would be his fire wall. ohio and iowa. and if he did a lot of stuff there and a lot of negatives on romney, they couldn't get by that. but what romney's done, they have gone over the fire wall and gone into pennsylvania, where obama's never been on the air. and in the last week, the last week of the election, obama is spenning about $2 million in pennsylvania and romney an
